Our Founding Story

Built from firsthand experience, then shaped with educators.

College Kickstart was founded in September 2013 by George Fan, an MIT-trained entrepreneur and Silicon Valley veteran, but most importantly, a parent who lived through the college admissions process firsthand.

After guiding two teenagers through college applications, George saw how overwhelming, opaque, and anxiety-inducing the process could be for students and families. What began as a passion project evolved into a platform built on real-world experience and direct feedback from students, parents, and college counselors.

In January 2016, College Kickstart expanded with the launch of its Counselor Edition, giving school counselors dedicated tools to manage student expectations and streamline the admissions journey at scale.

Today, College Kickstart's mission remains the same: help college counselors, students, and parents navigate the admissions process with greater clarity and confidence, with data leading every side of the decision.

The Team

The experts behind the College Kickstart experience.

Relationship managers and leadership with deep roots in education, advising, and the admissions process itself.

Victoria Zaroff

Victoria Zaroff

High School Relationship Manager (West)

Victoria brings something rare to her role at College Kickstart: she's been part of the platform's story since the very beginning. As one of College Kickstart's original beta testers in 2014, when her oldest child was navigating the college application process firsthand, Victoria experienced the platform as a parent before joining the team in 2016.

Nearly a decade later, she has partnered with at least 150 high schools and over 50 independent educational consultants, making her one of our most experienced Relationship Managers in the college admissions space.

Her connection to education runs deep. Self-described as one of those kids who genuinely loved school, Victoria has built a career around supporting the educators and counselors who make a difference in students' lives every day. It's a perspective that shapes how she thinks about the admissions process and the people navigating it.

Her advice to students is simple but worth repeating: lean on your counselor. Victoria has seen firsthand the depth of knowledge and dedication that college counselors bring to their work, and believes they remain one of the most underutilized resources available to families going through the process.

When she's not supporting schools and consultants, Victoria is on the soccer field every week. She's a dedicated Arsenal FC supporter, following both the men's and women's teams with equal enthusiasm.

Laura Krotky

Laura Krotky

IEC Relationship Manager (National)

Laura joined College Kickstart in 2023 with a focus on helping independent educational consultants become the best advisors they can be. She has worked with well over 1,000 consultants throughout her career, and one of her favorite parts of the job is meeting first-year IECA and HECA conference attendees and watching them grow into leaders in the field.

Laura's philosophy on college admissions is refreshingly grounded: there are exceptional schools beyond the Ivies where students can truly thrive, and the journey of finding the right fit matters as much as the destination.

Off the clock, Laura is a die-hard Celtics fan who was at the Garden the night Boston won the 2008 Championship. Garnett, Pierce, Allen - she'll tell you that team belongs in the rafters.

Pamela McLean

Pamela McLean

High School Relationship Manager (Mid-Atlantic)

Pam has been connecting families and schools with College Kickstart since 2020, but her roots in education stretch back to 2014, giving her more than a decade of experience guiding students and parents through one of life's most high-stakes journeys. She has worked with roughly 100 schools across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, DC, and Virginia, and her partners consistently cite her responsiveness and genuine care as what sets the relationship apart.

Pam's admissions advice cuts through the noise: academic data drives decisions. Extracurriculars support the story, but they do not lead it. And context matters because benchmarks and competition vary significantly by region.

Before education, Pam was a real estate attorney handling large-scale development loans. She applied to 17 colleges and 20 law schools - and was admitted to 16 and 20 of them respectively - so she knows her way around an application.

Katrina Driscoll

Katrina Driscoll

High School Relationship Manager (New England & The South)

With 30 years in education spanning teaching, coaching, admissions, and college counseling, Katrina brings a deep and well-rounded perspective to the team. Since joining College Kickstart, she has partnered with more than 100 schools, and says the variety of those school communities is exactly what makes the work rewarding.

Katrina's message to families is simple and hard-earned: the admissions process does not have to be stressful. With an open mind, it can be genuinely meaningful. Her school partners feel that perspective directly. One counselor recently told her that College Kickstart made the job more enjoyable and helped support more kids in making better decisions.

When she is not supporting schools, you'll likely find Katrina exploring a college town. She will tell you they are her favorite places to visit, and with 30 years in the field, she has seen some great ones.
